Wexford’s Dempsey included in Ireland U19 squad

Wexford Youths FC’s Shane Dempsey has been included in Sean McCaffrey’s Ireland U19 squad for the double header against France this week.

Ireland were beaten 3-0 by France in Waterford on Tuesday night and face the French again at Turner’s Cross in Cork on Thursday night.

Dempsey, whose cousin Gary signed for St. Patrick’s Athletic this season after successful spells with Dunfermiline, Aberdeen and Yeovil, was an unused substitute in the 3-0 defeat in Waterford on Tuesday night, when his Wexford Youths team mates were in the process of knocking Premier Division Cobh Ramblers out of the League Cup, but with Sean McCaffrey insisting that he will be making changes for the second French game, the Ireland manager may well choose to use Dempsey and give him his first cap for Ireland.

Dempsey would be following in the footsteps of Republic of Ireland striker Kevin Doyle, who was the only other Wexford Youths player to be capped by his country at this level.
