Launch Invitation - Galway United FC “Give Drugs the Boot” Campaign

Wednesday 26th February 2008: Galway United Football Club and the Western Region Drugs Task Force would like to invite you to the launch of the “Give Drugs the Boot” campaign on Thursday 27th March 2008 taking place in the Meyrick Hotel, Eyre Square, Galway on the 27th of March. Reception starts at 5.30pm. Minister for Drugs Strategy Pat Carey will formally launch the initiative and all members of the press are invited to attend.

The campaign is aiming to make people aware of the dangers of substance abuse and highlighting the services available to people involved in drugs. The involvement of Galway United Football Club will highlight positive alternatives available to young people; ways people can enjoy themselves other than substance abuse such as involvement in sports and clubs.

The “Gives Drugs the Boot” campaign takes the form of a Penalty Shootout competition which will take place in all main population centres in County Galway and the surrounding regions. Participants will shoot into a 16ft Inflatable Goalmouth and winners from each location will be carried forward to a grand finale at Terryland Park during an eircom League of Ireland game.

Each participant will receive a “Give Drugs the Boot” Goddie bag which will include an information booklet that will educate people on the dangers and prevalence of drug misuse and provide young people with supports necessary to make an informed choice on the issue. We aim to engage with 8,000 people over the coming months with Give Drugs the Boot.

Local Clubs are already backing the campaign to “Give Drugs the Boot” with Kiltmagh/Knock United and Ballinasloe FC taking an active role in implementing the campaign.
