{p,h,f,r} The End of July

Hi, there! I’ve been here for nearly seven years and this place still takes my breath away.  So many mornings, I just stand and watch the sun rise, watch the changing light, the changing sky, the long shadows and the golden spaces.  I love this place so: the hills and the valleys, the trees and the ponds – and that sky! I never get tired of it.  The poor people subscribed to my instagram feed might, but I never will.


We have beans!  Finally!  I did not think these vines would produce this year, so long did they seem barren.  Lush, but barren.  Finally, a couple of weeks ago, blossoms appeared, and today, I picked some beans!  It’s good to have another vegetable to supplement our tomato, cucumber, and zucchini diet.


We had piglets born on our farm last week, and my nieces from New Jersey, who are scheduled to arrive tomorrow morning, are anxious to hold and pet the wee little things.  I told Davey last night about their expectations.  “Do they squeal yet?” I asked.

He looked a little uncertain, but he went out to check.  “I picked one up and it didn’t squeal, so we’ll probably be okay.”

Our mama pig is a very sweet and mild mannered gal, but we know from experience that if she hears her piglets squeal, we are in a world of trouble!  (Don’t let that scare you, Beckie!  We’ll make sure your babies are safe, too!)


Beef!  It’s back on the menu!  We processed one of our dairy cows the other week, and just got her back yesterday.  Last night, we had burgers, and tonight, meatloaf.  It’s been months since we last tasted the goodness!  For the next week or so, we’ll be on the All Beef All The Time diet.  That’s a thing, right?

  1. I cannot believe you all have been there 7 years!! I’ve been following your blog for so long that it seems like you guys just got there. And lucky you with all that fresh ground beef!

    1. It’ll be seven years this fall. Crazy, huh? I’ve never lived anywhere this long! And ten years blogging as of this summer. 🙂 You’ve all seen a lot of babies grow up.

    Last night I was wishing I had some good quality ground beef. I love tacos and usually use our deer burger. It’s just not the same. Also do you process your chickens? I want to make some chicken stock and might be brave enough to add chicken feet for the gelatin. So if you have spare bones or feet let me know. 🙂

    1. I’ll have some beef to sell in the next week or so, though it is inconveniently (for you) packaged in two pound bags. Re freezing meat doesn’t bother me, though, so I’d just thaw and split.

      We do process our chickens ourselves, but we usually toss the feet! Not sure how to clean them adequately, but I’ll save some for you.

      I don’t mind thawing and freezing either. I believe you just scald the feet and the outer skin just peels off. But I will have to sneak and do this when hubby isn’t home 😉 Jeremy isn’t into all my “ideas”.

    Beautiful pictures! We just started this farm experience and it’s my goal to get to the point o process our own beef. Our chickens just started laying this week!

    1. Congratulations! Fresh eggs are great!

      For the record, we take our large animals to a pro and only do the little guys ourselves. Also, we’re quite a few years in and still feel like we’re just getting started. It’s a slow process!

    You give me hope for our beans, which have looked so close for a while now :^)

    That piglet is so dear- makes me want to push for some of those next!

    1. I don’t really like the pigs so much, but the turn around time on meat is pretty short, so I won’t complain. 🙂
