On Planning Your Own Birthday Party

Monday was my official birthday, and I had decided quite some weeks ago that I wanted to celebrate by taking the children bowling.  We haven’t been since we moved here, and, well, what’s the fun of having a birthday if you can’t have a party with your eight best friends?  The bowling alley even had a surprise deal where, for only $50, we could bowl for two hours, shoes included, eat two pizzas and drink two pitchers of soda.  Several times, small and not-so-small people slid over, slipped their arms around me, and whispered, “This is the best birthday ever!”

Celebrating my birthday like this is a habit I got into because of Davey’s deployment and training schedule.  He couldn’t really be counted on to plan a proper celebration – or even to be home! – and then people would be disappointed because they weren’t sure they’d given me the Best Birthday Ever, and that is the goal of each year’s celebration, don’t you know.  So I took all the pressure off and started planning my own day, and sometimes a whole week!  I always choose a family-friendly activity, and usually a meal out (Chinese take-out this year), and I have even purchased my own gifts.  (Not this year, though!)

No angst.  Happy family.  Best birthday ever, every year.

I just think there are enough things to worry about in this life.  Mama’s birthday shouldn’t be one of them.

Do you plan, or help plan, your birthday celebrations?

  1. I don’t, but I think maybe I will. It’s probably more of a stressor than fun to figure things out. Though my dear always does a great job.

    1. I think they love us so much and so want to make us a nice day, that it really IS quite a stressor.

I get stressed when I’m trying to figure out stuff for my husband so I imagine he must feel the same.

  2. For me, we go to the Renaissance Festival the weekend closest to my b-day. Everyone enjoys it.

  3. Happy Birthday! I’m glad you had such a nice day.
